March 19, 1957

March19Today in 1957, Elvis Presley bought Graceland.

The 23-room manor sprawls across 13.8 acres at 3764 South Bellevue Blvd in Memphis. Presley paid $100,000 to the home’s original owner, Ruth Moore. Moore had named the home Graceland after her great-aunt Grace.

Now, more than 700,000 people visit Graceland each year. These tourists walk throughout the home, file past Presley’s grave in the estate’s Meditation Garden, and purchase souvenirs in the shopping complex across the street.
