July 26, 2003

July26On this day in 2003, Limp Bizkit performs at the Hawthorne Racetrack in Chicago as part of Metallica’s Summer Sanitarium tour with Deftones, Linkin Park and Mudvayne.

But the crowd soon made it known how they feel about frontman Fred Durst and his band.

Limp Bizkit were reportedly booed as soon as they hit the stage. It got worse from there as Durst was pelted with coins and water bottles, leading him to launch into homophobic taunts.

In the end, Fred Durst walked off stage after 30 minutes and after playing only six songs. . . but not before Durst challenges audience members to a fight.

A breach-of-contract suit was later filed against Durst, seeking damages for at least 165 concertgoers who claimed that the rock/rap group Limp Bizkit instigated the uprising – not the fans – and that they then left the stage after less than 30 minutes, though they had contracted as part of a multi-act rock concert to play a full 90-minute set.
