Dec5On this day in 1998, Billboard changed the way they calculate the Hot 100.

Now the chart would finally be taking airplay into account. Previously, if a song wasn’t available for purchase as a single, it couldn’t chart. As labels withheld singles to garner album sales, popular songs like No Doubt’s ‘Don’t Speak’ were conspicuously absent from the chart, prompting the change.
