It is becoming increasingly common to find that well known actors eventually expand their talents beyond the screen: Zooey Deschanel, Will Smith, Miley Cyrus and even Donald Glover. What sets Donald Glover – better known by his stage name, Childish Gambino – apart from the various others who have attempted this double life is the fact that not only is he an actor on the hit show Community, where he plays Troy Barnes, but he is also a comedian! Glover was granted with a special on Comedy Now!, which led to his own stand-up show in New York a few years back.
A little over a month ago, Childish Gambino released his second studio album, titled Because the Internet, which began production in early 2012 and carried through until the end of 2013. The album was highly anticipated by fans and, needless to say, Glover did not disappoint.
Many have stated that the album, at 19 tracks, is too long. However, I would beg to differ. The album has been compared to the work of various artists, such as Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, and Drake. Though the album does not feature any of these artists, Gamino did not fail to include a wide dynamic of artists on the album. Featured on the album are Jhene Aiko, Llyod, and Chance the Rapper. Fans’ first preview of Because the Internet was when the first single ‘3005’ was released back in 2013. ‘3005’ begins with Gambino singing – almost serenading, it seems – that he will be right by someone’s side for a bit shy of a millennium (now that’s commitment). The sing-along album is filled with the witty Childish Gambino lyrics that we all know and love, including some of his well known stand-up one-liners. The album features a variety of different sounds; moving from the R&B sounds of ‘3005’ and ‘Telegraph Ave’, to the gangster grunge of ‘Crawl’ – a song that has been compared to Kanye West’s latest album Yeezus.
The 19 tracks might seem like an eye-sore; but, once you start listening to the album, you will notice that you are highly entertained throughout the entire thing. Glover proves to the world that he truly has what it takes to make it in the music biz – and he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.
I would highly recommend this album to anyone who is into rap or hip hop, or even anyone looking to try something new.
