On this day in 1967, Keith Moon, the drummer for The Who, drove his Lincoln Continental (not a Rolls Royce, as is often thought), into the swimming pool at the Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan, to celebrate his 21st birthday, earning the entire band a lifetime ban from the hotel chain.
Upon more research, I sadly found this great story to be one of many urban legends surrounding Moon. The Who’s guitarist Pete Townshend had this to say about the incident:
“Keith Moon driving a Rolls-Royce into a swimming pool is an erroneous conflation of two incidents. In one, he left the handbrake off, and the car rolled into a pool, which was under construction and waterless. In the other, he charged a new car to the band, who refused to foot the bill, so Moon drove into a muddy pond in his garden and called the dealer to pick it up.”
