April 1, 1966

April1Today in 1966, Pye Records released David Bowie’s first solo single, ‘Do Anything You Say’.

Bowie had previously been recording as David Jones and the Lower Third, and before that was jumping from band to band, unsatisfied with each of those groups.

While ‘Do Anything You Say’ featured Bowie’s backing band at the time – The Buzz – the record is the first to simply be credited to David Bowie.

It failed to chart.
