The Beaches were named the breakout band of 2013 by Toronto’s NXNE Festival and I can definitely see why. The Beaches is an all-female indie rock band hailing from the east side of Toronto, and these ladies are badass and very talented. Their sound resembles that of Patti Smith, Elastica and The White Stripes. The band has a very raw talent to them, their sound is authentic; it’s hard to believe these girls are all under the age of 19!
Their self titled EP was released with rave reviews, and their debut single ‘Loner’, the video for which was directed by Michael Maxxis, has been well-supported at MuchMusic, as well as at Western Alternative Radio in Canada and KXLU Los Angeles. The band has also been chosen as the backing track for French Connection’s Fall Winter International 2013 Ad Campaign – a pretty big deal for a new Canadian indie band.
‘Absolutely Nothing’ is a pretty kick ass track. The lyrics seem to address a scorned lover and all I can say is I wouldn’t want to be the one to piss these ladies off. I think a lot of the female listeners can relate to this song in some way. The track was also awarded the MuchFact grant for video production.
They slow it down a bit on ‘Youth Lament’. You really get a chance to hear the lead singer’s voice and can appreciate how talented this band is, with or without the heavy rock and instrumentation.
The EP is definitely worth a listen and the reviews on their live shows seem to be “jaw dropping”, as a fan put it. I can’t wait to experience these talented ladies up close and personal!
