“The next act, all the way from the Bucktown, Smif-n-Wessun!”
With rap careers stretching all the way back to the late 1990s, the performance of Brooklyn rap duo Smif-n-Wessun spent much of their set honouring that period of rap music, and rappers who “love Bucktown strongly.”
The two delegates from Bucktown traded verses on songs from their own catalogue like ‘Bucktown’. After they had gone through some of their own songs, Smif-n-Wessun briefly paused their performance in order to give a shout out to “those who paved the way for us, the hip-hop greats.” They then went into a brief rendition of Raekwon’s ‘Incarcerated Scarfaces’, and Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s ‘Shimmy Ya’.
The biggest crowd reaction undoubtedly came from the duo’s rendition of The Notorious B.I.G.’s ‘Juicy’. The late Brooklyn rapper’s classic song drew a large amount of excitement from the crowd, as they rapped along to the well-known verses of the ’95 hit. Smif-n-Wessun recognized the amount of excitement and energy the crowd was giving them throughout their act, and made sure that the crowd’s appreciation of the duo’s set would not go unacknowledged.
“You guys are great… when I get back home I’m going to have to slap [somebody], wow.”
