September 6, 1970

PRZ-001188Today in 1970, Jimi Hendrix made his last live appearance at the Isle of Fehmarn in Fehmarn, Germany.

Hendrix was originally slated to play on September 5, but heavy rains and gale-force winds delayed the performance to the following day. Hendrix could have left, but decided to stay and play a make-up show.

He told a reporter: “I’ll play tomorrow. Tomorrow at noon. I don’t have to, but I want to. The fans are out there in the dirt, I have to play for them. They came because of me. [Otherwise] I would have a bad conscience. . . .”

Hendrix died just twelve days later.
