September 3, 2005

September3Today in 2005, Fats Domino was rescued from his home in New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit the city.

The 77-year-old blues great was reluctant to leave due to his wife’s poor health.

Domino was originally reported dead, though he and his family were able to escape, though they lost everything.

However, President George Bush made a personal visit to replace the National Medal of Arts that President Bill Clinton had awarded him. Domino’s gold records were replaced by the RIAA.
