The festival was billed as the first international punk festival, and helped to draw punk music out of the underground and into the mainstream. Thanks to positive and extensive promotion by Melody Maker magazine, enthusiasm was high for the festival. Billed acts included Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, Sex Pistols, the Damned, among others.
The accident happened on the second night of a punk fest at the 100 Club in London. Sid Vicious, who was then the drummer for Siouxsie and the Banshees, is alleged to have thrown it.
As a result of the accident, all punk music was banned from the club.
