September 2, 2005

September2Today in 2005, during a live taping of a telethon to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina, Kanye West went off script, saying, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

The producers of the telethon, which was being broadcast on NBC, quickly cut to Chris Tucker, who was unaware that he was on camera.

The stunt would hardly be the last of West’s controversies. In 2006, West stormed the stage at the MTV Europe Music Awards after losing the Best Video award, and in 2009, he infamously stole the microphone from Taylor Swift as she accepted the award for Best Female Video, claiming that the award deserved to go to Beyonce.
