October 9, 1969

October9Today in 1969, the BBC’s Top of the Pops refused to air the No. 1 song, ‘Je T’aime. . . Moi Non Plus’.

The French song by Serge Gainsbourg and actress Jane Birkin was deemed too erotic to air on the show.

The song featured hyper-sexualized lyrics and female moaning in the background. It even culminated in an apparent orgasm.

The track caused such a stir that the original label, Fontana, dropped the record, despite it being No. 2 on the charts. Major Minor, a smaller label, later bought the rights to the song, which proceeded to hit No. 1 – a first for any French-language song.
