October 28, 1997

October28Today in 1997, Bill Berry, drummer for R.E.M., announced that he was quitting the band.

He said: “I’m just not as enthusiastic as I have been in the past about doing this anymore . . . I have the best job in the world. But I’m kind of ready to sit back and reflect and maybe not be a pop star anymore.”

When he broke the news to the band, he told them he wouldn’t quit if they would disband. So, with his blessing, R.E.M. continued as a trio.

Berry became a farmer, working on his hay farm in Georgia.
