May 28, 1964

May28On this day in 1964, Marianne Faithfull records her version of Keith Richards’ and Mick Jaggers’ song, ‘As Tears Go By’.

Written by Richards, Jagger and their manager, Andrew Oldham, the song became a popular hit for both singer Marianne Faithfull in 1964, as well as for The Rolling Stones when they released their own version in 1965.

Oldham had given the ballad to Faithfull for her debut record as a B-side. The successful outcome of the recording caused Decca Records to change the song to an A-side, making it a commercial hit single.
