Majical Cloudz / Youth Lagoon

MajicalCloudzWhile the rest of Toronto were glued to their seats watching the hockey game, I was at The Great Hall to catch Montreal duo Majical Cloudz, who opened for the Youth Lagoon.

Majical Cloudz, comprised of Devon Welsh and Matthew Otto, produce songs with layers of emotion and thoughtfulness. Welsh has an odd way of addressing an audience, choosing to give an explanation for how dark a song is, offering a paper plate to the audience, or inviting them on stage during the last few songs – one of which included an acapella version of one of their songs. These quirks add to the captivating aura of the duo, who will be back in Toronto during NXNE.

Youth Lagoon took the stage in front of a multicoloured, surfboard-eqsue backdrop. Immediately apologizing for Toronto’s loss that night, and a few times later on in the set, Trevor Powers and crew were calm. Powers invited the crowd to “lose themselves” with him during the set, and with the lights and the head swimming sound, the set up would have been perfect for a good trip.

YouthLagoonYouth Lagoon are smooth and flawless live, offering up a set filled with a surprising amount of life.
