July 12, 1996

July12On this day in 1996, Jonathan Melvoin was found dead of a heroin overdose in his New York City hotel room.

Although Melvoin grew up playing the drums in many punk bands throughout the 1980s, he was currently the touring keyboardist for the Smashing Pumpkins during their Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness tour.

There are many unanswered questions surrounding the events that took place the evening of his death. Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was with Melvoin and apparently tried to revive him, but to no avail. Melvoin was wet when paramedics arrived and Chamberlin had said the 911 operator told him to put Melvion’s head in the shower until help arrived. Paramedics pronounced Melvoin dead immediately upon their arrival.

The members of Smashing Pumpkins were uninvited to the funeral.

Sarah McLachlan’s song ‘Angel’ was inspired by Melvoin’s passing.

He left behind a wife and child.

He was 34 years old.
