On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley performed on NBC’s Steve Allen Show, singing ‘Hound Dog’ to an actual basset hound sitting on top of a stool in a prop hat and glasses. Elvis himself was dressed in a tuxedo.
Presley had recently appeared on The Milton Berle Show, singing the same song, but that time, he showed the world what he could do with hips. This time, he was ordered not to dance.
Once backstage, a humiliated Elvis was scolding the Colonel for agreeing to the gig. The next day, fans would protest the show, demanding to see ‘the real Elvis.’
