December5Today in 1970, Judy Collins’ rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ entered the U.K. singles chart for the first of eight times.

Recorded in the chapel at Colimbia Universiry, the track spent a total of 67 weeks on the chart, though it never hit the No. 1 position.

The lyrics to the famous Christian hymn were written by English poet and clergyman John Newton, and were first published in 1779.

As of September 2011, more than 7,000 recordings of the song are known, including those by H.R. Tomlin and J.M. Gates, Fiddlin’ John Carson, Mahalia Jackson, Joan Baez, and Arlo Guthrie, who performed his version of the song at the Woodstock Music Festival.
