December 4, 1988

December4Today in 1988, Roy Orbison played his final show in Cleveland, Ohio. He would die of a heart attack just two days later.

Orbison had begun an exhaustive schedule. His second chance at stardom had surprised him; he was quoted saying, “It’s very nice to be wanted again, but I still can’t quite believe it.” Despite chest pains, Orbison played a few shows and took part in several interviews across Europe and the U.S.

He returned home for some rest and relaxation before heading to London to film two more music videos. On December 6, after flying model airplanes with his son and eating dinner at his mother’s house, Orbison suffered a fatal heart attack.

He was 52 years old.
