December 3, 1968

December3Today in 1968, Elvis Presley’s now-famous comeback TV special was aired on NBC.

The special was recorded before a live audience in June, marking Presley’s first performance in more than seven years.

The show turned out to be NBC’s highest-rated special of the season, capturing 42 per cent of the total viewing audience.

Jon Landau of Eye magazine said of the performance: “There is something magical about watching a man who has lost himself find his way back home. He sang with the kind of power that people no longer expect of rock ‘n roll singers. He moved his body with a lack of pretension and effort that must have made Jim Morrison green with envy.”
