December 26, 1957

Today in 1957, Elvis Presley got a temporary draft deferment so that he could finish filming the movie, King Creole.

Earlier that year, the Memphis draft board announced that Presley was classified 1A, meaning that he would likely be drafted. So, when he received his draft notice on December 20, it wasn’t a total shock.

He was in the middle of filming King Creole at the time. However, Paramount and the film’s producer, Hal Wallis, had already invested $350,000 into the film. As a result, Presley’s notice was deferred for a few months.

On March 24, Presley was inducted into the U.S. Army as a private.
