If there is any band that appreciates the opportunity to be playing music in front of an audience, it’s badbadnotgood, who headlined Saturday night at the Horseshoe Tavern during Canadian Music Week. Matthew Tavares (keyboards), Chester Hansen (bass), and Alexander Sowinski (drums) have recently been making headlines with their experimental, electronic hip-hop, and Saturday’s show was nothing less than impressive.
The trio is anything but tame live. Hansen’s bass is heart-pounding and his solos were greeted with cheers from the crowd. They performed covers of songs by Gucci Mane, TNGHT, and Flying Lotus, accompanied on stage by a saxophonist during the slowed down version of the latter’s ‘Pretty Boy Strut’. A pit began at the front of the stage, which caught the trio’s eye, as well as the attention of a few crowd surfers, making for a more than exciting time.
They made their gratefulness known several times throughout the set, showing their humility and, ultimately, earning respect from the audience for much more than their musical prowess.
