You know those songs that just take hold of your heart and don’t let go? With harmonies so sweet and lyrics so catchy, it’s hard not to love this upcoming pop group. Originally from Vancouver, Hey Ocean! has worked hard to get where they are today. They have released their albums through their very own label, Pop Machine, and have toured coast-to-coast. It is a band of three: Ashleigh Ball, David Beckingham and David Vertesi. All three sing and play guitar. Additionally, Ball plays flute and Vertesi plays bass. They’re better than ever with their third studio record titled Is, that came out in May. Is is a blast of infectious pop music that refreshes, like a jump in the ocean.
Hey Ocean! has a new perspective and that’s what makes them so unique.
On ‘I Am a Heart’, they sing:
“I am a heart that’s hard to pin / You dig a hole and I fall in / But I’m still beating underground / Down here you think I won’t be found.”
Meanwhile, ‘Bicycle’ offers lyrics like “Some people just weren’t cut out for this kind of life”.
The storytelling in their songs sets them apart from other artists, and puts them in a category all their own. Some tunes are up-tempo and make you want to dance, and others make you feel as if you’re on a ship, sailing the ocean. Some of them have a totally different vibe, such as ‘Bicycle’. This one has a jazzy and laid-back feel to it. The variety really shows the diversity of this band and the risks they’re willing to take with their music.
Hey Ocean! songs are like imagery personified. No matter what song you are listening to, there is bound to be a clear image in your head of what is being sung about. Take ‘Islands’, for instance. The voices melt into each other, as if creating a sunrise effect (you’ll know when you listen), and you can almost feel the warm breeze blowing through your hair. It is as if the ocean is talking, whispering a secret lullaby, just for you. You create an island in your head where “you and I can swim” and the rest is up to you. There is this sense of freedom with Hey Ocean!’s music, which is truly an extraordinary thing.
“She wears a ring already / She’s steady in love with another man / And he thinks she’s really ready / So why does she keep touching my hand?”
Another thing to love about Hey Ocean! is how honest and relatable their lyrics are. This band is not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves, and that is quite admirable in an artist. It’s hard to connect with someone if they don’t open up, and this band has opened up in such a beautiful way.
Listen to this to Is when you need a shoulder to lean on. Listen to Is if you just want to have a good time. And lastly, listen to Hey Ocean! to let your imagination fly.
